Andamento                    Interior movement specific to a mosaic.


Interstice                       Space separating the tesserae ones.


Mosaïque                      To assemble various elements (tesserae) to create an image.


Opus                            Manner of laying out tesserae the ones beside the other.


Opus circumactum         Opus in which the tesserae ones are laid out in range.


Opus incertum               Opus in which the tesserae ones are cut and placed randomly.


Opus lapilli                    Opus characteristic of the mosaics carried out with small round stones.


Opus musivum               Opus in which the tesserae ones of the bottom follow contours of the drawing (opus vermiculatum applied to the entirety of the bottom).


Opus palladianum          Opus in which the tesserae ones are laid out in a very irregular way.


Opus regulanum            Opus in which the tesserae ones are laid out regularly on line horizontally and vertically.


Opus reticulatum           Opus tessalatum in which the tesserae ones are placed according to an oblique line.


Opus segmentatum        Insertion in a opus tessalatum of larger tesserae of the same color.


Opus scutulatum           Opus incertum in which one inserts the tesselles ones of color and different size.


Opus tessellatum           Opus in which the tesserae ones are laid out in horizontal lines. Vertically, the joints should not coincide.


Opus vermiculatum        Opus in which a line the tesserae ones is laid out to underline a drawing.


Opus alexandrinum        Alternative of the opus sectile realized with the tesserae geometrical ones with very hard materials like porphyry.


Opus certum                 Opus in which the tesserae ones are cut out in a uniform way.


Opus sectile                  Opus using of tesserae of geometrical form very carefully cut out.


Tessera                         Small pieces of stone, marble, enamels, molten glasses, glass, roller, etc entering the composition of a mosaic.
